Alamo Heights distance runner Abby Gray commits to Arkansas

Alamo Heights’ senior distance runner Abby Gray has committed to Arkansas. Gray, who won gold medals in the Class 5A 1,600 and 3,200 runs at the UIL state championships in May, chose the Razorbacks over Texas.

“When I visited up there, the facilities, the coaching, the team all seemed to click,” said Gray, who made an official visit to Arkansas in late September. “I got that feeling, and I really liked it.”

Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day Gray can sign a National Letter of Intent is Nov. 11.

Gray will become a teammate of 2015 Smithson Valley graduate Devin Clark, who won the Class 6A UIL state cross country championship a year ago. After battling Clark for so long in high school, she’s happy to become one of her teammates.

“Me and Devin have become really good friends,” Gray said. “I’m really excited to be her teammate.”

Gray said she is happy to have made her college choice before the cross country post season begins. On Thursday, Gray won the District 27-5A individual championship by nearly 2 1/2 minutes. Gray will next race in the Region IV championships, scheduled for Oct. 26 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

“I definitely wanted to have over with early because I didn’t want to have to worry about it during the whole rest of the season,” Gray said. “It was a fun process. I’m excited to finally have a place that I can call my own for the next four years.”
